Hope Center Houston is a Spirit-filled Christian church that upholds all of the core doctrines of the authentic first church. We believe the Bible is the foundation and source of all truth, our moral compass, and the final authority on all matters of ethics and doctrine.
We are a church that views scripture through the lens of renewal theology. We believe all the gifts of the Holy Spirit are available to believers today to strengthen and equip the church.
Our Statement of Faith below summarizes our essential, non-negotiable doctrines. With regard to all other doctrines, we adopt the approach of Luke who writes that these new Christians, "continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine." There are three questions here. First, what does that mean, "to continue steadfastly?" Secondly, what is meant by the term, "the apostles’ doctrine?" Thirdly, what was that doctrine?
First, "to continue steadfastly," means to LIVE IN. It means to seek the Truth, discuss the Truth, find the Truth, and practice the Truth. In other words, these folks adjusted their lives in accordance with their new life in Jesus Christ. The apostles were instructing them along those lines. This is what they CONTINUED in.
They were not doing this on their own. They had the Holy Spirit, who was seeking to guide them into all Truth. They also had the apostles’ themselves. Today, we have the apostles’ doctrine. It is the Bible. The entire New Testament was written by an apostle, or a close associate. All the authors of the NT were personal eye-witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
So "to continue steadfastly," means to keep walking in the Truth. It means to be growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. These people had "gladly received the Word of Truth." Now, having received it, and been converted to Christ, they CONTINUED STEADFASTLY in it, by coming under it’s power, and by living in it.
What does the term, "apostles’ doctrine" mean? It means the teachings of the apostles; of those who had walked and talked with Jesus, and had been called for this special purpose. The apostles had been given great revelation from God. They passed it on to the church.
We see here that God uses people. He is in charge, of course, by His Holy Spirit. But all of us need articulation and explanation we can understand. So despite the fact that the Holy Spirit is really the One who is doing all of it, God uses people as instruments.
We believe the goal of all right doctrine is to help us grow in love for God and love for people (Matthew 22:37-40). We love the body of Christ and we support other authentic Christian churches and authentic Christ-followers.
BIBLE | We believe the Bible is the infallible and inspired Word of God, and the only foundation for life.
GOD | We believe there is one God, who has revealed Himself as our Father, in His Son Jesus Christ, and as the Holy Ghost.
Jesus is both God and man. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Ephesians 4:4-6; Colossians 2:9; I Timothy 3:16)
CREATION | We believe in the Biblical account of creation. God is the Creator of the universe and everything in it, including mankind.
SALVATION | We believe that we are saved by grace (God’s unmerited favor). Salvation cannot be earned through good works. It is God’s free gift to those who repent of their sins and put their faith in Jesus Christ, who are Born Again and live in obedience to His Holy Word.
WATER BAPTISM | We believe that all believers should be water baptized as a obedience to the Word of God, in the name of Jesus Christ according to Acts 2:38 and is a part of the New Birth process according to John 3:5-8
ETERNAL LIFE | We believe that Jesus came to earth and died so that we can live an “abundant life” here on earth and enjoy eternal life in heaven after we die.
SECOND COMING | We believe that Jesus Christ will physically return to the earth one day to judge the wicked, and to gather and reward His followers.
MARRIAGE | We believe in and uphold the biblical definition of marriage as an exclusive, conjugal union between one man and one woman. Heterosexual marriage was ordained by God at creation and is the basic institution of society. We only perform and bless marriages that meet this biblical criteria.
